Three Revered Titles Conferred on Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj

Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, one of the most revered spiritual leaders of modern times, was honored with several prestigious titles that reflect his profound impact on the spiritual world. Each title highlights a unique aspect of his divine personality, unparalleled knowledge, and transformative teachings. Here are three significant titles conferred upon him, each carrying deep meaning and significance.

Jagadguruttam (“Supreme Amongst All Jagadgurus”)

On January 14, 1957, the Kashi Vidvat Parishat, a distinguished assembly of 500 Vedic scholars in Varanasi, bestowed upon Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj the title of Jagadguruttam, meaning “Supreme Amongst All Jagadgurus.” This title is of extraordinary significance because it recognizes Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj’s unparalleled ability to reconcile the various philosophies within Hinduism — Advaita, Vishishtadvaita, Dvaita, and others — by demonstrating that they all ultimately lead to nishkam bhakti (selfless devotion). His teachings emphasized that in the current age of Kaliyuga, the most accessible and effective path to God-realization is through selfless devotion to Shri Radha Krishna. By uniting these diverse philosophies under the common goal of Bhakti, he earned the title that none before him had achieved, marking him as the highest of all Jagadgurus.

Bhaktiyogarasavatara (“Descension of Divine Love and Bliss”)

Another profound title given to Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj is Bhaktiyogarasavatara, which translates to “Descension of Divine Love and Bliss.” This title encapsulates the essence of who he was — an embodiment of pure devotion and divine love. Unlike other spiritual teachers who taught Bhakti as a concept, Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj was seen as the very manifestation of Bhakti itself. His presence was often described as radiating an overwhelming aura of divine love and bliss that captivated and uplifted all who came into contact with him. This title aligns with the belief that he was a living incarnation of mahabhava, the highest stage of divine love, traditionally associated with Shri Radha, the epitome of devotional love. Through his teachings and personal example, he made the profound depths of divine love and bliss accessible to all seekers.

Shrimat-padavakya-pramana-paravarina (“The Greatest Scholar with Unsurpassed Knowledge of the Scriptures”)

The title Shrimat-padavakya-pramana-paravarina was conferred upon Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj in recognition of his extraordinary mastery over the vast corpus of Hindu scriptures. This title, which translates to “The Greatest Scholar with Unsurpassed Knowledge of the Scriptures,” reflects his ability to effortlessly cite verses from the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and other sacred texts, and weave them seamlessly into his discourses. What set Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj apart was not just his scholarly depth, but his unique ability to convey complex spiritual concepts in simple, relatable terms. His discourses were known for their clarity and practical applicability, making the highest truths of Vedic philosophy accessible to all, regardless of their background or level of understanding.

Conclusion

These three titles — Jagadguruttam, Bhaktiyogarasavatara, and Shrimat-padavakya-pramana-paravarina — are more than mere honors; they encapsulate the essence of Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj’s life and teachings. As the Supreme Amongst All Jagadgurus, he harmonized the diverse philosophies of Hinduism, guiding countless souls on the path of selfless devotion. As the Descension of Divine Love and Bliss, he embodied the very essence of Bhakti, making divine love a tangible reality for his followers. As The Greatest Scholar with Unsurpassed Knowledge of the Scriptures, he illuminated the path to God-realization with the light of scriptural wisdom. Together, these titles reflect his extraordinary contributions to spiritual thought and his enduring legacy as one of the greatest spiritual leaders of our time.
